Grades 6–8 | Ages 11–14
A transformative journey from guided learning to empowered leadership

Central Theme:
Becoming Change makers: How Can We Impact Our World with Wisdom and Empathy? At Empathy, the Middle School program enhances students’ thirst for knowledge, boosts their emotional intelligence, and inspires them to take action for a better world. The learning approach becomes more exploratory, hands-on, and crosses subject boundaries.

Curriculum Philosophy & Framework
Middle School builds upon the EQ Smart Curriculum developed at Harvard, blending:
  • American academic standards (Common Core, NGSS)
  • Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
  • United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Nature-connected, inquiry-based approaches
Empathy School believes that adolescents thrive when they are invited to:
  • Explore complexity with purpose
  • Reflect on their identity and values
  • Engage in meaningful, real-world action

  • Grade 7: Future City: Designing for Equity and Ecology
  • Grade 8: Youth Voices for Change: What the World Needs to Hear

These projects connect English, Math, Science, SEL, and Design for Change—culminating in real community impact.

Assessment & Reflection

Empathy School values progress over perfection. We assess students through:

  • Rubric-based project evaluation
  • Peer and self-assessments
  • Student-led exhibitions
  • Narrative reports with academic and SEL feedback
  • Growth portfolios and journal reflection

Learning Environment

As always, classrooms are collaborative and flexible. Learning can seamlessly extend to outdoor areas such as gardens, riversides, or nature labs. Students start to co-create their environment along with their learning path, thus fostering responsibility and leadership skills.

Middle School as a Bridge

Building blocks to the next stages of life commences in Middle School, revolving around supporting the learner’s self-initiated inquiry, strengthening digital fluency, physical health, and even nurturing academically. As learners refine their distinctive voice, they start being supported in the tools, skills, and frameworks to aid in the transition to high school and further education.

In addition to core academic and interdisciplinary learning, students engage in two vital growth areas:

  • Movement & Wellbeing, where fitness, teamwork, individual objectives, and a lifelong appreciation of mind-body awareness are used to approach physical health holistically

Additionally, seventh and eighth graders can participate in Passion Projects, which are selfdirected or guided investigations into a chosen subject. These projects prepare them to lead with empathy, confidence, and curiosity in Empathy’s High School Program by fostering ownership, purpose, and real-world impact.
