Gardening Time at Empathy School – Thursday, 12 September (08:45 – 10:00)

If we could plant anything in this world, and it would surely grow, wouldn’t you want to plant kindness?

On Thursday, 12 September (08:45 – 10:00), Empathy School will host Hands-on Gardening with Dewi in our school garden. This is more than just a morning activity—it’s an invitation to step into the rhythms of nature, nurture new life, and experience firsthand how care and patience can transform a seed into something thriving and beautiful.

Gardening is increasingly recognized as a powerful educational tool. A study in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (2017) found that students involved in gardening programs not only gained environmental knowledge but also adopted healthier eating habits. Similarly, research from the Royal Horticultural Society shows that gardening activities build resilience, reduce stress, and foster stronger social connections—qualities that align closely with Empathy School’s vision of holistic learning.

Interestingly, this gardening session complements another ongoing activity at Empathy School: Cooking with Fresh Produce led by our nutrition team. While cooking emphasizes creativity in preparing meals and understanding food as nourishment, gardening brings us closer to the origin of that food. Together, these two activities complete the cycle—from soil to plate—helping students appreciate the entire journey of what they eat. Where cooking sessions highlight teamwork in the kitchen, gardening emphasizes collaboration outdoors, reminding us that both care and effort are essential in creating something meaningful.

By engaging in both gardening and cooking, students can see the direct link between the environment and their own well-being. Gardening teaches patience and responsibility, while cooking reinforces creativity and resourcefulness. Both encourage mindfulness, community spirit, and a deep appreciation for life’s simple processes.
