Today, more and more parents are realizing the importance of freeing their children from the limits of traditional classroom walls. Through the Winter Camp at Empathy School International, Ubud, we aim to offer a new kind of learning experience, one that takes place in nature, through play, exploration, and creativity.
Designed by a Harvard University graduate and supported by the Stanford Seed Program, the Empathy School International Winter Camp in Ubud promises to be an unforgettable educational adventure for your children.
We design our program to awaken and optimize all five senses — touch, sight, hearing, smell, and taste — through immersive, nature-based experiences. Every activity is crafted to help children explore the world around them with curiosity and confidence.
Touch — Learning by Doing
At Empathy School International’s Winter Camp, children learn through touch; by building, shaping, and creating things with their own hands. Every activity is designed to help them understand the world not by theory, but by direct experience.
They climb coconut trees, feel the texture of clay, and see how simple materials like soil and seeds can create life. In the process, they learn about balance, patience, and teamwork.
Workshops such as eco printing, metallurgy, or Gebogan and mandala making introduce them to both science and local culture, not as lessons to memorize, but as discoveries to be made. Whether mixing soap, studying insects, or crafting seed bombs, children experience how curiosity turns into knowledge.
It’s learning that stays on their fingertips. Not just in their notebooks.
Sight — Exploring Bali’s Living Landscape
In this part of the program, children learn to see — not just to look. Through activities like exploring Subak, forest walks, and playing by the river, they begin to notice patterns, colors, and movements that tell the story of Bali’s living landscape.
The Subak irrigation system, recognized by UNESCO, shows how water connects mountain to sea and people to one another. As children walk through rice fields and watch the flow of water, they witness how culture and nature work together in balance.
During forest walks, they learn to slow down — to notice how light shifts through the trees, how leaves differ in shape, and how life moves quietly around them. And by the river, they see how nature reflects and changes, turning simple moments into lessons about rhythm, flow, and harmony.
It’s a way of seeing that builds awareness — of place, of detail, and of connection.
Hearing — Listening to Nature’s Rhythm
Hearing connects children not only to sound, but to meaning. At Winter Camp, they learn to listen; to the rustle of leaves, the movement of water, and the quiet hum of daily Balinese life.
One of the most memorable moments comes when they encounter the kul-kul, Bali’s traditional wooden bell that calls people to gather. Each beat has a purpose, to celebrate, to warn, to pray — and through it, children discover that sound carries stories, emotions, and intentions.
By tuning in to these rhythms, they begin to understand how listening builds awareness and empathy, not just toward nature, but toward each other.
Taste — Savoring Nature, Culture, and Creation
Taste connects curiosity with memory, it’s how children experience culture through the senses. Every bite, every sip, tells a story about where food comes from and the people who make it.
In our Taste activities, children explore flavor and knowledge side by side. They roast and grind cacao beans during the Organic Chocolate Journey, discovering how nature and science combine to create sweetness. They mix turmeric, ginger, and lemongrass in Traditional Jamu Making, learning about Indonesia’s herbal wellness traditions.
Around the campfire, they cook Sate Tempe, share what they’ve made, and see how simple ingredients can nourish both body and connection. Through Coconut Creations and Colorful Tea Experiments, they learn about chemistry, color, and the responsibility of using what nature provides wisely.
Here, taste becomes more than flavor, it’s a way to understand the world through care, curiosity, and creation.
Smell — Breathing in the Essence of Nature
Smell carries memory more deeply than any other sense — one breath can bring back a place, a feeling, or a moment. At camp, children learn to recognize the world through its scents: the aroma of freshly brewed tea, the spice of jamu, and the earthy smell of rice fields after rain.
They notice how the forest smells different from the river, how damp soil and warm wind each tell their own story. Every fragrance becomes a quiet lesson — about growth, balance, and the connection between people and nature.
By noticing and naming these scents, children practice mindfulness and gratitude. They begin to understand that the world doesn’t just look beautiful — it smells alive.
Sustainability — Learning to Care for the Earth
Beyond creativity and exploration, children at Empathy School’s Winter Camp also learn what it means to take care of the planet. Sustainability here isn’t a theory — it’s a habit built through everyday action.
Through “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” projects, children see how small choices can make a lasting impact. They turn discarded materials into something useful and beautiful, discovering that caring for the Earth can begin with their own hands.
Activities like Recycled Paper Making and T-shirt to Bag Workshops teach resourcefulness and creativity. Eco Printing introduces the chemistry of color using natural pigments, while the Batik Workshop connects them to Indonesia’s traditional art of pattern and patience, rooted in sustainability.
Each project helps children understand that the Earth gives endlessly — and that caring for it is both a responsibility and a joy.
